This is a table of fresh fruit donated by Mayan farmers to TJ participants
at the village of Santa Teresita on the occasion of the construction
of a community center.

In the mists of volcanic Lake Atitlan, in the western highlands of this ancient Mayan civilization, the village of San Lucas provides a site to charm and challenge participants.  Local women weave textile patterns passed down through 20 generations, while the men retain a mystical connection with the land of their grandparents.  These advanced horticulturists have much to teach their guests about agriculture and life itself.

"The building was only a way to enter into deeper relationships with the people.  It was the means to
build cooperative bonds with them that are eternal in nature"

-- Rogers Strickland,
owner of Strickland Construction, Overland Park, KS, after donating and constructing a Butler building for the people of Santa Teresita, San Lucas Parish, Guatemala

Activities may include harvesting coffee, helping with children in the local daycare, assisting with health services, or helping build a Mayan village community center, school, or church (picture at left).  If you want a physical challenge, join a group that always climbs Atitlan, the volcano with a view of the Pacific Ocean.
